Amazingly, traces of Old Norse still exist in the English language today. It is estimated that almost 5,000 basic words in English (almost twenty percent) are so-called “loan words” from the Old Norse language which was spoken throughout Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway, and Sweden) as well as in Scandinavian settlements and colonies. Norse mythology refers to the Scandinavian Mythological structure that was upheld during the Viking Age. Reeling back the flashbacks, in order to get a proper detailed image of the myths, beliefs, and customs as they really were in that age is no mean feat, especially for an overwhelming oral society. The characters don’t speak English. It’s the same as with any movie or TV show set in a foreign country: they should be assumed to speak their own language, only it’s rendered in English for your convenience.
